Best Buddies is a non-profit organization dedicated to building 1:1 friendships, leadership development, inclusive living, and integrated employment for individuals with disabilities. At Ashlawn, our mission in Best Buddies is to raise awareness of our Functional Life Skills program while increasing inclusion opportunities in our school and surrounding communities. What do Best Buddies do?

• Monthly chapter meetings where we explicitly teach communication and inclusion strategies, such as using an Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) device
• One inclusion opportunity a month to join our FLS classroom!
  • Inclusion opportunities can range from playing with our FLS students at recess, practicing reading to them in the classroom, and more!
• Fundraisers and inclusive events throughout the year to raise money for Best Buddies programs like ours across the D.C. area.

Voted the VA/DC Outstanding Chapter of the Year in 2024, Ashlawn Best Buddies is aiming to expand our program and improve our school climate by creating a culture of acceptance and inclusion for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
